After their University's president signed a denunciation of the Academic Boycott resolution passed by academics in the UK, students of Toronto's Ryerson University campaigned for a university-hosted debate on the issue.
The students' relentless efforts succeeded, and on Wednesday, November 28, 2007, the debate was held, moderated by Suhanna Meharchand of the CBC and featured four professors, three of whom were from Ryerson itself. Two professors, John Caruana (Philosophy) and Stuart Murray (English), presented arguments against an academic boycott. Two others, Alan Sears (Sociology) and Salim Vally (Politics - based in South Africa but in Toronto as a visiting scholar) presented in favor of the boycott.
