The Right to Education Under Occupation: A Case Study of the Arab Orphan School, East Jerusalem

This report documents how the continuing Israeli occupation significantly impedes education in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). It notes that UNICEF has reported that 144 schools in the OPT were disrupted during the 2005/2006 academic year as a result of Israeli military activities, resulting in the disturbance of schooling for 64,712 students and 2,470 teachers. Research conducted in 2004 revealed that 226,000 children in 580 schools found going to school “impossible, irregular or very risky”, facts which are important to bear in mind when making the case for academic boycott.

Death Traps: Landmines in Golan

Under Israeli occupation since 1967, the Occupied Syrian Golan is an area whose inhabitants are victims of landmines and other explosive devices used during Israeli occupation. These landmines have caused death and injury to dozens of people, mainly children. Israeli authorities, which did not sign the Ottawa Convention banning the use of landmines, have at times openly declared that they consider landmines to be a necessary means of defence and only a handful of minefields have been cleared.

Besieging Health Services in Gaza: a Profitable Business

This report looks at the effects of the siege imposed on Gaza by Israel on the health of Palestinians who live there. Not only is it rare to be able to leave Gaza for treatment, it is necessary because the health infrastructure in Gaza itself is impoverished and under-resourced due to the blockade and economic strangulation of Gaza. Fuel shortages and lack of clean drinking water are compounded by attacks in health workers and Israeli pharmaceutical multinationals which seek to profit by selling at high prices to a captive population.
