PACBI Statement

The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) urges all filmmakers, particularly Palestinian filmmakers, not to take part in the 45th Mostra Internationale del Nuovo Cinema in Pesaro, Italy.  Italian solidarity groups, responding to the Palestinian call for boycott, have called for a boycott of the Festival due to its hosting of a retrospective on Israeli cinema, in collaboration with the Israel Film Fund, an organization that is founded and funded by the Israeli government.

PACBI salutes the British Committee for Universities of Palestine, BRICUP, for its decisive role in the University and College Union Congress’s overwhelming endorsement of several motions unequivocally supporting Palestinian rights; condemning Israel’s occupation and apartheid; denouncing the complicity of Israel’s academic institutions in the state’s system of oppression against the Palestinians; and adopting the logic of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel, despite intimidating legal threats.

Once again, the membership of the University and College Union (UCU) has not let Palestinians down.  The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) salutes our British colleagues for their steadfast and principled support for the cause of justice and peace in Palestine and for adopting, at the UCU’s annual congress on 27 May 2009, significant steps in the direction of applying effective pressure on Israel and holding it accountable for its colonial and apartheid policies which violate international law and fundamental human rights.
