Occupied Palestine, 7 September 2015—The Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC), the broadest coalition in Palestinian society that leads the global BDS movement, considered the European Union's move towards labelling Israeli settlement products, announced at a recent EU press conference, as insufficient for fulfilling European states’ legal obligations under international law.

The press briefing by EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini followed the meeting of the foreign ministers of the EU's 28 member states in Luxembourg.

Analysis

The Palestinian cause is not a charity. The international community, however, has often failed to grasp the nature of the struggle for justice, preferring to channel funds to Palestinian "development" projects to compensate for the lack of will to put serious pressure on Israel. That mentality has been challenged by two recent reports that suggest that lip service to justice for Palestinians could be transformed into critical action.

Moreover, much of the EU money given to Israel for research and development has been used to directly support activities in settlements.

(Brussels, 27 July 2012) This week the EU announced it would strengthen its bilateral relations with Israel by endorsing a package of 60 new areas of cooperation. Amnesty International regrets that this decision has been taken without giving due consideration to the need to seriously address ongoing violations of international human rights and humanitarian law in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.
