Palestinian academics have been heartened by the outpouring of solidarity with our people on the part of British academics and students – the latter attested to by the creative "student occupation movement" in the wake of the brutal Israeli war against the Palestinian people in Gaza last December and January.

Adalah-NY: The Coalition for Justice in the Middle East
PACBI, 5 May 2009 - Twenty-one staff members of the University of Tromsø (www2.uit.no/www/inenglish) have signed a call for boycott of all Israeli academic institutions.
The initiative calls for the University to "establish an academic boycott of Israel", of Israel‘s "institutions of education, research and culture, and the institutions‘ representatives, regardless of religion and nationality."

Since its inception Israel has taken great pains to destroy all signs of Palestinian culture and target Palestinians who chose cultural production as their method of resistance. Edward Said explained "Culture is a way of fighting against extinction and obliteration", and it is basic to colonial policy to present the colonized as primitive, backward and uncultured.
