Apartheid is a crime against humanity. States and international organizations, foremost the United Nations, have a legal obligation to give no recognition or assistance to an apartheid regime, and to act to bring it to an end. Individuals responsible for the crime are to face prosecution and punishment by domestic courts or the International Criminal Court.
Decades of struggle on the ground and international solidarity, coupled with measures taken by the United Nations, ultimately succeeded in ending apartheid in South Africa. The UN established a Special Committee and a Center to help eradicate apartheid. It also imposed a military embargo and later wide-ranging economic, cultural and diplomatic sanctions on apartheid South Africa.

Those of us who were involved, even modestly, in the global boycott movement then watched in tears as Nelson Mandela became president of a free South Africa. We took pride in being part of that glorious history.
