Palestinian political prisoner, Nasser Abu Hmeid dies due to Israeli medical negligence

Since 1967, 233 Palestinian prisoners have died in apartheid Israel’s dungeons as part of a systematic policy of medical negligence and delays in providing treatment.

Palestinian political prisoner Nasser Abu Hmeid died in an apartheid Israeli jail earlier today as a result of systemic medical negligence. Israeli prison authorities had ignored Nasser’s complaints of pain and denied him access to medical care for a long while until he was finally diagnosed with lung cancer in August 2021. Nasser fell into a coma and was taken to hospital on Monday, where he died in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners Society: “This is part of a systematic [Israeli] policy of medical negligence and delays in providing treatment, which all the [Palestinian] prisoners are exposed to, not just Nasser.”

Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association reports that since 1967, 233 Palestinian prisoners have died in apartheid Israel’s jails, including 74 who died as a direct result of systematic Israeli medical negligence.

Today, there are 4,760 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails, including 160 child prisoners and 33 women prisoners. Some 820 of them are administrative detainees held without charge and denied due process.

We call for intensifying BDS efforts globally to express meaningful solidarity with Palestinian political prisoners and to pressure Israel’s regime of apartheid, settler-colonialism and occupation to #FreeThemAll, starting with revoking its policy of administrative detention and respecting the rights of our prisoners.

We reiterate our call for boycotting HP, a blatant example of corporate complicity in Israeli apartheid. HP still provides its services to Israeli prisons and police and thus is a major partner in Israel’s war crimes and crimes against humanity perpetrated against our Palestinian people, including political prisoners.

No matter how challenging our path ahead may be with the rise of the openly fascist right to power in Israel, we shall continue the struggle for our liberation, for our inalienable rights to freedom, justice, the right to return and self-determination.

#FreeThemAll
