Help #FreeMahmoud: Israel extended his detention…again

Mahmoud expresses his deep gratitude to everyone who has joined the #FreeMahmoud campaign. Take urgent action now to tell the UN and the European Union to defend Palestinian human rights defenders and pressure Israel to set Mahmoud free.

Today, an Israeli military court extended by five more days the illegal detention of Palestinian human rights defender and BDS General Coordinator Mahmoud Nawajaa. Israel has failed to present any charges against Mahmoud to date.

It is time to step up our pressure now to #FreeMahmoud!

Thanks to your efforts, Israel bowed to growing international pressure and a High Court petition filed by Addameer, finally allowing Mahmoud Nawajaa to see his lawyer on August 11th, after being detained and held incommunicado for 12 days.

Take two actions to help #FreeMahmoud and further grow our BDS campaigns.

Despite the Israeli internal security interrogators’ efforts to intimidate him, his lawyer reports that Mahmoud remains strong and determined to continue the struggle for Palestinian freedom, justice and equality. Mahmoud expressed deep gratitude to everyone who has joined the campaign to free him from Israel’s apartheid dungeons.

In Ramallah and Gaza, more than 150 representatives of Palestinian trade unions, women’s associations, political parties and BDS supporters rallied Tuesday in front of the representative offices of Germany, which currently holds the EU presidency, to demand EU pressure on Israel to set Mahmoud free.

1. Let’s amplify their message and tell EU Foreign Affairs chief Josep Borrell that continued EU inaction amounts to outright complicity:

Help us send an equally determined message to the UN Human Rights chief Michelle Bachelet, urging her to denounce Israel’s persecution of Palestinian human rights defenders, like Mahmoud.

2. Tell the UN it must act to defend Palestinian human rights defenders. Period.

In their call for Israel to “immediately and unconditionally release Mahmoud, Amnesty International said:

Advocating for boycotts, divestment and sanctions is a form of non-violent advocacy and of free expression that must be protected. Advocates of boycotts should be allowed to express their views freely and take forward their campaigns without harassment, threats of prosecution or criminalization.
