The livestreamed genocidal horror of rolling massacres and induced starvation inflicted by apartheid Israel on millions of Palestinians in the illegally occupied Gaza Strip has reached a breaking point. Lately, we have seen statements from multiple western states, who are complicit in this genocide, reflecting a symbolic political shift. From the Global South, we have seen concrete measures taken only by a handful of states even though the popular consensus is with holding Israel accountable.
When thousands of our babies are looking death in the eye because the Israeli occupation is denying all goods from entering Gaza, including baby formula and essential medical supplies, NEVER AGAIN IS NOW!
Altogether, a majority of states including our own government are far from meeting their legal obligations under international law, including the Genocide Convention and the Apartheid Convention. They are required not only to refrain from committing genocide but also to prevent and punish it. This duty is immediate and binding.
Any continued provision of arms, fuel, dual-use items, military-intelligence support, political protection to Israel or shielding of alleged Israeli war criminals from accountability in accordance with international law directly violates these obligations.
UN human rights experts have said following the ICJ ruling about Israel’s illegal occupation and apartheid last year, to fulfill their legal obligations, States must at a bare minimum “Cancel or suspend economic relationships, trade agreements and academic relations with Israel that may contribute to its unlawful presence and apartheid regime in the occupied Palestinian territory,” and “Impose a full arms embargo on Israel.”
We call on your office to immediately take these necessary measures to fulfill our obligations of non-complicity, prevention and punishment of Israel’s genocide against millions of Palestinians in Gaza. It is a legal and moral duty to end this genocide, not a choice.
We demand that our elected representatives and their offices respect this duty, instead of merely posturing, paying lip service, or, worse, staying complicit as Israel simultaneously exterminates Palestinians and obliterates the foundations of international law.
