Cancel the Peres Visit! Do Not Honour the Dishonourable!
Open Letter to the Master of Balliol College at the University of Oxford

Ramallah, Occupied Palestine,
November 13, 2008
- The Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI) views with grave concern the decision of Balliol College to honour Shimon Peres by inviting him to give a special lecture at the College on November 18th. The Campaign is also concerned about reports that a lecture series is being planned in Peres's name.

PACBI Statement

We believe that honouring Peres is an affront not only to Palestinians, but also to a significant segment of UK academics. These academics‘ determined support for Palestinian rights, by calling for the isolation of Israel in the world community and refusing to treat it as a normal nation until it fully respects international law, has earned the admiration of Palestinian and solidarity movements across the world.

Palestine, October 2008 - The Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions National Committee (BNC) calls on the hosts in the fourteen American cities where the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to perform between October 26, 2008 and November 16, 2008 to rescind their invitations to the Orchestra. We urge the hosts to support the Palestinian civil society's call for boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel, including the boycott of Israeli cultural institutions.

In a recent media interview McCartney confessed, "I was approached by different groups and political bodies who asked me not to come here. I refused. I do what I think, and I have many friends who support Israel." Public opinion in the UK, however, does not support Israel's occupation and violation of international law. Media reports revealed, furthermore, that many in Liverpool itself are apprehensive towards McCartney's gig in Israel.
