More than 23,000 people have signed an appeal urging the UN to take measures to protect the rights of Palestinian, Israeli and international human rights defenders who campaign nonviolently for Palestinian rights, including through the BDS movement.

The appeal is organised by the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the broadest coalition of Palestinian civil society organisations that leads and supports the BDS movement.

The Palestinian labor movement welcomes the declaration from the Human Rights Secretariat of the Uruguayan Federation of Workers of Services and Commerce (Fuecys) calling for the boycott of Israeli products and for companies in Uruguay to break their ties with Israel’s apartheid.

Update 4pm 10 May: The Israeli government has confirmed that Omar's "residency is under review by the attorney general". An Interior Ministry spokeswoman told AFP that the Interior Minister is considering Omar's permanent residency status and that “His (BDS) activities are also part of this.” This shows that the measures being taken against Omar are deeply political.
