Lisbon Pride Refuses Participation of Apartheid Israel’s Ambassador

The Organizing Committee, which includes more than 20 of the most prominent Portuguese organizations working for queer and trans liberation, said it would be “hypocritical” to allow States practicing segregation, apartheid and colonization to join the march.

We warmly welcome the principled stand by the Organizing Committee of Lisbon Pride (Marcha do Orgulho LGBTI+ de Lisboa) to refuse the participation of apartheid Israel’s ambassador in this year’s march.

The Committee said it would be “hypocritical” to allow States practicing segregation, apartheid and colonization to join a march celebrating the “struggle for LGBTI+ rights, human rights and equality.”

With this act of meaningful solidarity, Lisbon Pride has embodied the true spirit of the indivisibility of justice. It has stood strong with Palestinian queers calling to refuse the Israeli government’s pinkwashing agenda, which aims to falsely present itself as a “progressive” and “tolerant” society while racially painting Palestinian queers as somehow “foreign” to their own society.

The vile, defamatory attacks by the Israeli ambassador on the Lisbon Pride Organizing Committee, which includes more than 20 of the most prominent Portuguese organizations working for queer and trans liberation, only serve to peel back the mask of apartheid Israel’s pinkwashing agenda.

Around the world, there is growing awareness of the interconnectedness of our struggles and refusal of deceitful pinkwashing practices, whether by oppressive regimes or harmful corporations.

We are deeply inspired by Lisbon Pride’s ethical position and celebrate all those working to achieve true equality for all.
