In the face of worldwide pressure, the Gates Foundation has sold down its shares in the world’s largest Private Military and Security Company, G4S. Over 100 Palestinian and international organisations, including War on Want, launched a campaign calling on the Gates Foundation to divest its £110m stake from the company. Thanks to everyone who joined the campaign, signed the petition and participated in protests.

Campaigners protest G4S Annual General Meeting (War on Want)

Palestine solidarity activists, Stop G4S campaigners and a Danish member of parliament combined to take over the annual general meeting of G4S in London Thursday afternoon and focused the spotlight on the security company’s complicity in human rights abuses against Palestinians and others.

Analysis

The world's biggest private security corporation G4S, has been having a bad week. But the company has been enjoying a great decade. While the Olympics scandal is putting G4S in the spotlight, its extraordinary global reach and controversial track record are making for some uncomfortable reading.

The transferring of policing, detention and deportation to profit-driven private companies needs to be properly scrutinised.
