La decisión de Stephen Hawking de respaldar el llamamiento de los académicos palestinos a negarse a dar legitimidad a Israel y a sus instituciones cómplices hasta que se haga realidad la autodeterminación palestina ha tenido un tremendo impacto entre las y los palestinos, especialmente en la comunidad académica. La decisión  comunicada por Hawkins –ejemplar, directa e inequívoca– a la organización de la conferencia israelí de relaciones públicas en la que se honrará al presidente del Estado en junio no tiene precedentes en un académico internacional de su talla, y es profundamente apreciada por la sociedad palestina.

In a landmark event held in New Delhi on 22-23 September 2010, the conference “A Just Peace for Palestine” ended with a clear call for BDS as a strategy for realizing justice for Palestinians. The conference was co-organized by the Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the Committee for Solidarity with Palestine, the All India Peace and Solidarity Organization, and the recently established Indian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, and supported by several organizations, including Focus on the Global South and COVA.

In the Palestinian Campaign for Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), we often face criticism from people who wish to stand in solidarity with Palestinians without respecting the boycott guidelines set by Palestinian civil society.  Setting guidelines, the argument goes, is too restrictive and rigid, alienating the liberal mainstream from the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.  The alternative proposed by some is to let everyone decide how he or she wants to implement BDS, thus allowing for maximum flexibility and growth for the movement.
