On Palestinian Land Day, the international community must double efforts to end Israeli apartheid

Forty-five years ago today, Israeli police shot and killed six Palestinian citizens of Israel as they were protesting the Israeli government’s expropriation of thousands of dunums of Palestinian land. Since then, March 30 has been commemorated by Palestinians everywhere as Land Day.

Even though Israel has put its official annexation of more Palestinian land on pause, its de facto annexation, which has been going on for decades, is escalating. Israel keeps on stealing Palestinian land, denying Palestinian livelihood, as a means of ethnic cleansing.

CAF contributes to Israel's system of illegal occupation and apartheid through the Jerusalem Light Rail (JLR), which serves Israel’s illegal settlements, entrenching colonization and apartheid. As a result, CAF is the target of an international human rights campaign supported by major trade unions in Europe, including those representing CAF workers.

European public institutions, CAF’s main clients, can and should exclude CAF from tenders and contracts because of its involvement in gross human rights abuses through its business with Israel’s illegal JLR project.

On this Land Day, Palestinians are reminding public institutions in Europe and around the world of their legal and ethical obligations: Respect our human rights. Do not award contracts to CAF or any company listed in the UN database of businesses that are complicit in Israel’s illegal settlement enterprise in the occupied Palestinian territory.

Today human rights activists are organising in different countries asking their public institutions to exclude CAF from public tenders/contracts until it ends its role in the JLR. Support them by Clicking on the following tweets to HS2 ltd, the company developing the new high speed railway in the UK, and the UK Department for Transport (DfT) to exclude CAF from the bid for the HS2.

  • 2. Sending e-mails to the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Norske Tog’s CEO to exclude CAF from their rolling stock tender/contract.

  • 3. Sending emails to pressure the Spanish public train company RENFE to exclude CAF from all public tenders/contracts.

  • 4. Sending emails to Dutch authorities urging them to exclude CAF from future tenders/contracts.
