Thank You Letter to Maryam Abdulhadi al-Khawaja

Dear Maryam Abdulhadi al-Khawaja,

We, at the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, wish to express our deep regard for your cancellation of a lecture [1] at the University of Connecticut where your father, Abdulhadi al-Khawaja, was to be honored for his human rights leadership [2].  Your public letter stating that you could not do this while the president of Israel, Shimon Peres, was to be honored simultaneously speaks to a principled understanding of collective human rights, and the need for global solidarity in our struggles for liberation.

We observed your father‘s struggle with great concern, and understood the connection between his struggle for freedom and those of our Palestinian prisoners.  His hunger strike was our hunger strike!  We, therefore, take seriously your father‘s words that "when it comes to human right, there is no grey area, you either stand for human rights everywhere and against perpetrators of human rights violations or you do not."  From Palestine to Bahrain, we stand with you, firm in the knowledge that only together, supporting each other‘s struggles, can we free ourselves.

Sincerely,

PACBI
